The estuary is on the far reaches of the forest village ‘Titirangi’ that translates in te reo Maori to mean “fringe of heaven”. According to the Maori writer, Witi Ihimaera, the name Titirangi recalls a sacred mountain in the ancient land of Hawaiki. As well as being a beacon on the cosmic periphery, Titirangi is also on the edge of the Auckland metropolis, the largest city in an island nation that dwells on the edge of world maps, hence my publishing company Circadia Press has the byline ‘books from the edge of the world’.
